Louise Suggs.

Although not quite the prodigy that Dot Kirby and Louis Suggs were, Mary Lena Faulk evolved to being one of the best golfers of her era. In 1946, she won the first of three consecutive Georgia Women’s Amateur Matchplay Championships. In 1953, Faulk won the U.S. Women’s Amateur, and then in 1954 she lost in the semifinals to Mickey Wright. She was a member of the 1954 U.S. team that defeated Great Britain to win the Curtis Cup, and in Georgia, she won the state’s 1954 Medal Play Championship.

In her rookie year on the LPGA Tour in 1955, she finished second at the U.S. Women’s Open. Faulk retired from the pro tour in 1965, having won ten tournaments including the Women’s Western Open, which was then a Major in women’s golf championships.

Suggs passed away in 2015. “I feel like the LPGA lost a parent,” Commissioner Mike Whan said of her.

But I’m extremely confident that her vision, her competitiveness and, most importantly, her spirit will be with this organization forever. Like a parent, she cared deeply for her LPGA family and took great pride in their successes. She always made time to hear my problems and challenges. Her personal guidance was priceless. Like a parent, I think she was even more proud of the LPGA players of today than she was of her own playing results .
